From receipt folios, to pens to sign receipts, and cash tips and handing credit cards back and forth, the amount of points of contact are numerous. As restaurant operators, there are several options to employ for a touchless payment to those guests joining you for a “socially distant” dine-in experience. With the use of technology, there are many ways to conduct a touchless payment process.
87 percent of consumers like the idea of contactless or touchless payment as a safety measure.*
Pay Ahead
This works via websites or over the phone. Unfortunately, this only covers to-go and delivery type orders.
Card "dipping" or EMV Chips
These are the chips that are imbedded in cards and allow the customer to retain possession of the card during the transaction. They are currently ubiquitous in retail and many restaurants have adapted them as they carry a much lower transaction cost from lower risk of fraud.
NFC or Near Field Communication Technology
This is tech that allows Apply Pay, Android Wallet and other e-wallet apps to function. While this may sound complicated, 88% of POS systems shipped as of 2017 had NFS technology on board.** The trick is activating it for use.

- First, contact the POS company and determine if their software supports NFC. It might be as simple as calling the support number and asking them to enable it.
- Second, if the POS doesn’t have touchless capability, reach out to your credit card processor and inquire about their NFC solution.
- If you do not have a POS system, terminals from credit card processing companies can stand alone, if there is a phone line or data line.
