Markon Targets Packaging with New Reduction Initiative

As a leading produce supplier, Markon Cooperative Inc. is introducing the first of its new line of Ready-Cycle, corrugated, fully-recyclable clamshells, leading the way to reducing the amount of packaging used in the foodservice industry. Beginning with strawberry cartons, this new standard is part of Markon’s sustainability initiative to reduce the amount of packaging in its supply chain, as well as increase recyclability.

“By converting from our plastic strawberry clamshells to cardboard, we will be saving nearly 30 tons of plastic from possibly ending up in landfills or oceans,” said Tim York, Markon’s president. “We understand it won’t be easy, but it’s about doing the right thing and this is a step in the right direction for the future. These new goals exemplify our commitment to finding changes that reduce environmental impacts.”

Through Markon’s work with grower-partners and Sambrailo Packaging, the company will begin offering Markon First Crop (MFC) two-pound strawberry containers, with plans to also offer similar one-pound containers already in motion. Customers will have the choice to purchase these cardboard clamshells beginning as early as this summer.
