Consumers’ view of the economy (and their position within it) is closely tied to their dining-out frequency. As the former improves, the latter is likely to increase. In May, compared to March of last year, percentage-point increases of 10, 21 and 9 points were observed in consumers’ reported intentions to dine out once a week or more often in the year ahead at full-service, fast-food and fast-casual restaurants, respectively. Fast casual restaurants actually registered their largest increase—11 percentage points—among consumers who intend to dine there a few times per month. Across all three restaurant segments, compared to last year, a higher percentage of consumers indicate they plan to dine out at more frequent intervals in the coming year and a lower percentage plans to dine out at less frequent intervals. |
